What is Pet Peace of Mind? This groundbreaking national program enables hospice patients to keep their pets at home with them throughout their end of life journey. For many in hospice care, changes in their physical condition lead to a decrease of previously enjoyed social opportunities and relationships. Their pets offer unconditional love, acceptance, comfort and companionship when it's needed most - the time when friends and family aren't seen as frequently or when words are too hard to say.
Pet Peace of Mind provides helping hands and financial assistance so that caring volunteers are able to help patients with pet care needs. With this loving support, patients are able to complete their end of life journeys without worrying about their pet's current or future needs.
The Pet Peace of Mind program is designed to assist Cornerstone Hospice patients as we address the physical, emotional, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the individuals in our care while we offer guidance and support to those who share their lives. At Cornerstone Hospice we know that pets who share our lives are family. That is why we are the first hospice in the state of Florida to introduce Pet Peace of Mind.
Pet Peace of Mind will enable Cornerstone Hospice to afford food, litter, and the basic veterinary care that our patients desperately need for their pets.
Sometimes after patients have been diagnosed with a terminal illness, they don’t have time to consider if they have a friend or family member who can take their pet when they go into the hospital or a hospice house.
Recently, one of our patients needed to go to the hospice house but refused because he didn’t have a home for his dog.
Out of sheer compassion our staff picked up his dog and assured him that Jamie would have a good home. The gentleman died shortly afterward, peacefully, knowing that his beloved animal was in someone’s loving care. If we had known about his situation beforehand, it would have saved the patient a great deal of anxiety.
Jamie......going to her new home.
Part of the Cornerstone goal is to include family pets in the patients’ care planning so they have an opportunity to consider making proper arrangements for their pets.
