Sacred Space

Sacred Space

At Cornerstone Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., we honor and respect our patients and families by offering them an environment at the end of life that is condusive to peace and comfort. We provide a Sacred Space, a ritual in reverence.

Cornerstone Hospice home health aides transform patients’ physical surroundings into an intimate, personal space that allows for a spiritual end-of-life experience.

Sacred Space deserves sacred words and actions. Each step is intentional and meaningful.   It is a comforting place devoid of chaos and clutter.  Silence is powerful.  Home health aides respect the quiet and speak softly, lovingly and reverently. A clean-smelling, calming, warm and tranquil space can include

* Soft music or the soothing sounds of nature for a blissful state of quiet and peace.

* Flickering candles in a dimly lit room to feel nurtured and safe.

* Prayers or other rituals (if requested) to bring in the divine presence.

* A bath with a relaxing hand rub which is gentle and respectful, preserving privacy, dignity and grace

* Anything to create a place of glory which then becomes part of a ritual in reverence.

Invoking the senses comforts the soul while providing feelings of holiness.  Our patients find themselves in a place of stillness, beauty and serenity … a Sacred Space.

I would like, at the end, to be able to see the tree outside the bedroom window, to sit or lie on the flower-filled sun porch … to feel that the children and friends, if they wanted to visit, could come to the place of beauty that we have shaped. -- Herbert and Kay Kramer, Conversations at Midnight.
